(WWJ) A 10-year-old Detroit boy has died, after being shot in the chest in Warren.
Warren Police Commissioner Bill Dwyer said it happened early Wednesday afternoon, at the Warren Manor apartments on Dequindre Rd., north of 8 Mile Rd.
The critically wounded child was rushed by EMS with a police escort to Children's Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Dwyer said there were eight other kids at the apartment unit with the victim, and that investigators believe one of the juveniles fired the weapon.
"They are going to be all brought into the Warren Police Department for investigation," Dwyer told WWJ Newsradio 950's Jason Scott. "There is other information that I have that they're uncooperative, and apparently they tried to hide the gun. But it's very fluid, very early in the investigation."
Officers obtained a search warrant, and recovered a small-caliber handgun.
It's still unclear where the kids got the gun, as details are still developing.
"It could have been accidental; we're not sure yet," Dwyer said, adding however that police do not believe the victim shot himself.
Along with the younger children, Dwyer said police are also interviewing a 17-year-old girl who was at the scene. There were no adults home at the time, Dwyer said.
The victim's name has not yet been released.
