DETROIT (WWJ) - A Detroit teenager has been charged with second degree murder in the death of her newborn daughter.

Announcing the case against 16-year-old Detroit girl on Wednesday, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said the teen will be charged as a juvenile.

According to prosecutors, the teen gave birth to a baby girl in a toilet at an apartment in the 9100 block of Agnes, in the East Village neighborhood, on Feb. 21. It's alleged she then wrapped the infant in a towel, placed the body in a purse and hid it in a closet in her room.

EMS was called to the home that night to take the teen to a hospital for treatment of a unknown medical condition, and police found the child's body the following day.

No further information was immediately released about this tragic case.

A pretrial hearing is scheduled for Oct. 25 before Referee Sean Kerman at the Juvenile Detention Center.

Editor's Note: An earlier version of this story erroneously stated that the defendant was charged with first degree murder as an adult designated juvenile. The article has since been updated to reflect corrected information sent by prosecutors.
