(WWJ) Five people are hospitalized after a crash involving a police cruiser on Detroit's west side.

It happened Thursday afternoon near Dexter Ave. and Oakman Blvd., according to Detroit Fire spokesman Dave Fornell.

"They called it in and said there's been an accident in front of the fire station here and it involves a police car," Fornell told WWJ's Sandra McNeill. "And we ended up sending four medic units, and all four medic units transported. So it was pretty serious."

People in both vehicle involved were hurt.

"We had two police officer taken to the hospital, a 24-year-old female and a 26-year-old male...We also had three other males and a civilian car, two 23-year-olds and an 20-year-old, and they were transported (to the hospital) as well," Fornell said.

Police said the driver of the car that crashed into the police cruiser appeared to have run a red light. Police also believe speed may have been a factor in the crash, although the investigation is ongoing.

All five people were last reported in temporary serious condition.

No names have been released.
