(WWJ) Multiple dogs were rescued when police and field agents with Michigan Humane raided a house on Detroit's northwest side.

Spokesperson Anna Chrisman told WWJ Newsradio 950 they were acting on a tip about illegal dogfighting when the warrant was served on Wednesday.

They recovered eight mixed-breed dogs, along with dog fighting paraphernalia  at the home on Pinehurst Street, in the area of Puritan and Meyers.

As for the condition of the dogs:

"They're actually getting checked out with our veterinary medical team," Chrisman said. "We will make sure that existing medical conditions are started on a course of treatment right away."

Chrisman said the dogs will be assessed later on as to whether they are safe to adopt out into loving homes.

In the meantime, rescue workers will take good care of them.

"We'll also be providing the animals with enrichment that will hopefully help ease the stress of transitioning from their former conditions to life here at our facility," she said. "Anything from playing soft music to keep stress levels low. We'll also do oftentimes feedings through enrichment feeders and we'll use PVC tube feeders and things like that, and it just helps keep the dogs engaged and helps work off a little of that nervous, pent up energy, helps keep their brain going, all of that."

No information was released about suspects in the case.

There have been no arrests yet, but the investigation is ongoing.
