Beaumont Wayne Preparing For Phased Reopening As Coronavirus Cases Slow

(WWJ) Beaumont Health System says it is preparing to reopen its Wayne campus to patients with and without coronavirus.

In a press release; officials said the 'phased' reopening is possible after the campus received "required regulatory approvals."

Phase 1 will include opening up the Emergency Center, services for expectant mothers; and observation and inpatient surgical beds, according to the release.

Pharmacy, laboratory, and 'environmental services' are set to resume. The Infusion Center and a few other outpatient services are also slated to reopen.

In phase 2, Beaumont hopes to add more inpatient and critical care beds to its Wayne facility on Annapolis Street near Venoy Road.

"With the number of COVID-19 patients seeking care at Beaumont now decreasing a bit…it is now appropriate to begin re-opening the Wayne campus in phases as we carefully prepare for another surge in COVID-19," Mark Geary, Beaumont Director of External Communications and Media Relations, said in the release.

Officials say the Wayne campus was initially converted to an all COVID-19 hospital and assigned to provide surge capacity for other Beaumont facilities. But it was not needed in the way they expected it to be.

Therefore, the hospital was temporarily shut down. Staff and resources were deployed to the other seven Beaumont facilities seeing a flood of patients—in Royal Oak, Troy, Farmington Hills, Grosse Pointe, Canton and Dearborn.

Data from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services says Beaumont Health System has 71% of its bed occupied, including all patients regardless of their COVID-19 status. 559 people with confirmed coronavirus are being treated in the seven hospitals right now. 248 in the ICU.

Beaumont Health System says it has treated and released 2,540 COVID-19 patients since March 1. Doctors and nurses have successfully weaned 280 coronavirus patients off ventilators.

No date for reopening the Wayne campus has been announced. Beaumont has vowed to keep patients posted as additional services come back online in accordance with Governor Whitmer's Executive Orders.
