(WWJ) A Dearborn Heights man is jailed on charges in a freeway shooting that injured a Detroit woman.

Michigan State Police responded to the scene, along the Southfield Freeway (M-39) at W. McNichols, just before 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 11.

There, troopers found a 31-year-old woman suffering from "an obvious gunshot wound."

She was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The Wayne County Prosector's Office said an investigation by MSP and Detroit Police eventually led to the arrest of 28-year-old Devonte Burton.

Burton was arraigned in 36th District Court Wednesday on the following counts: Assault with Intent to Murder, Assault with Intent to Do Great Bodily Harm, Discharged of a Firearm from a Moving Vehicle Causing Serious Impairment, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Carrying a Concealed Weapon, Carrying a Firearm with Unlawful Intent, and five counts of Felony Firearm.

Bond was set at $225,000 cash/surety, and a Probable Cause Conference was scheduled for July 24.

As for a motive, State Police have said a majority of freeway shootings in recent weeks have been a result of road rage incidents; although it's not yet clear if this was one of those. The prosecutor's office said further information will come out during future court proceedings.

Wednesday evening, MSP said a stretch of northbound M-39, from I-96 to Fenkell/Grand River Ave., was shut down for a time to allow detectives and K9 troopers to search for further evidence in the case.

Police did not say whether anything was found.

Michigan Department of Corrections records show Burton has a criminal history, including convictions on Home Invasion charges in Wayne County.
