(WWJ) Now three weeks since Gov. Gretchen Whitmer declared a State of Emergency over the coronavirus, the number of cases and deaths in Michigan continues to climb.

As of today, Michigan has 9,334 confirmed cases of the virus, with a total of 337 related deaths statewide.

The new official count, reported by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Wednesday afternoon, includes 1,719 new cases and 78 additional deaths since this time yesterday. A note on testing: Officials say out of 29,324 specimens tested by the state health department so far, 22,054 were negative and 7,158 were positive. Note that these counts represent the total specimens tested, not the number of people. A patient can have more than one specimen tested, so the number of specimens tested may be more than the number of patients tested. Also, because these numbers do not include testing from all sources, that's why the number do not line up with total cases confirmed. This latest comes as Detroit is offering free drive-up coronavirus testing by the hundreds. Vehicles have been lining up daily so residents can be tested for symptoms of COVID-19 at the former State Fairgrounds — but for some, getting access to those tests is nearly impossible. Testing is only available by appointment and residents need a prescription or testing order from a physician, which is difficult to come by. READ MORE

Meanwhile, the TCF Center in downtown Detroit is quickly turning into a field hospital for coronavirus patients. More on that HERE.

The three main symptoms of coronavirus are fever, cough and shortness of breath. In order to mitigate risk of spreading COVID-19, everyone is encouraged to take action to reduce the spread, including: wash your hands often with soap and water or use hand sanitizer; avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands; cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing; avoid handshakes; avoid contact with people who are sick; and stay home when you are sick. Officials are urging social distancing -- staying at least six feet away from other people -- to help flatten the curve.
