(WWJ) A Detroit City Councilman, already under federal indictment for bribery, has been charged in state court with misconduct in office.

The Monroe County Prosecutor's Office on Friday filed a felony count of misconduct in office against 37-year-old Gabe Leland, stemming from alleged bribes to influence his vote on city matters.

Monroe County Prosecutor Michael Roehrig was asked to investigate the case because of a conflict of interest with the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office.

Authorities allege that, starting in January 2017 and lasting for just over a year, Leland demanded thousands of dollars from local businessman Robert Carmack, in order to help settle a land dispute.

Back in 2018, Leland told reported "I'm innocent, and I'm looking forward to trial."

On Friday, Leland did not immediately issue a statement or comment ore return calls seeking comment on the latest developments.

If convicted, Leland faces up to five years in prison and/or a $10,000 fine.
