Detroit To Have Residential Streets Plowed Within 24 Hours

DETROIT (WWJ) - Contractors are hitting the streets of Detroit to clear snow from nearly 2,000 miles of residential streets.

Under new guidelines announced last year, contractors are required to make two passes to clear a total width of at least 16 feet along the city's 1,884 miles of residential streets -- and they have within 24 hours to get the job done. Plowing contractors starting hitting the streets at 7 a.m. Tuesday.

Residents are asked to remove their vehicles from the street, if possible, to allow contractors room to open path wide enough for two-way traffic.

Efforts to keep high priority major roads began once the snow started to cover the pavement. According to city policy: For less than three inches of snow, roads are treated with salt within 24 hours of snow stopping; For accumulations of three inches or more, crews use a combination of salting and plowing as needed until roads are clear and passable from curb-to-curb.
