Man Charged In Shooting At Westland Mall; Police Seek To ID Others Caught On Video

(WWJ) A Detroit man is jailed on more than a dozen charges for a shooting at a suburban mall, while police search for witnesses.

The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office says 24-year-old Gregory Travis Jones was in a jewelry store at Westland Mall in Westland with some acquaintances on July 9, when they got into an argument.

When the dispute escalated, authorities say Jones pulled out a gun, initially firing it into the air. It's alleged he then fired shots toward the men he was arguing with as they ran away.

Not one was shot, but police said two bystanders just outside the store were hit with shattered storefront glass.

Social media erupted with witness accounts and reports of an "active shooter" at the mall.

"This was not a random act of violence as the parties involved had interactions prior to their confrontation at the Westland Mall," the Westland PD said.

By the time police got to the scene, Jones and everyone else involved had fled the area.

Following an investigation, Detroit Police and the U.S. Marshal Fugitive Apprehension Team tracked him down and made an arrest.

Jones is charged with two counts each of Assault with Intent to Murder, Assault with Intent to Do Great Bodily Harm and Felonious Assault, as well as one count of Discharge of a Firearm in a Building, one count of Carrying a Concealed Weapon and seven counts of Felony Firearm.

Bond was set at $1 million cash/surety at an arrangement in 18th District Court on Wednesday.  If he posts bond, police say Jones is required to wear a GPS tether and remain in his home.

He will be back in court for a Probable Cause Conference scheduled for July 23.

Meanwhile, Westland police are still working to identify others seen in surveillance video from the store that witnessed the incident.

Anyone who has any information regarding the shooting, or know the identities of anyone involved, is asked to call Det. Kameron Sleep at 734-467-7914.
