WWJ -- As House Speaker Nancy Pelosi launched a formal impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump on Tuesday, Congresswoman Debbie Dingell of Dearborn says she supports the beginning of the inquiry.
Speaking live on WWJ Tuesday night, Dingell says Congress has a duty to fulfill -- even if it means putting a sitting president under the microscope. The investigation focuses on whether Trump abused his power in seeking help from a foreign government to aid himself in his reelection campaign, according to the Associated Press.
"Congress has a responsibility to investigate what these allegations were," Dingell said live on WWJ. "My fundamental responsibility as a member of Congress is to keep this nation safe and protect the Constitution."
"When someone is using appropriated funds designated for national security to threaten a world leader for their own personal and political gain – it cannot be ignored. It requires action. We need the facts," Dingell tweeted earlier in the day.
Trump allegedly asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy for help in investigating Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden and his son, Hunter, earlier this summer. Trump allegedly ordered a freeze on millions of dollars in military aid to gain leverage on Ukraine. The president has denied the allegation of trying to dig up dirt on the former Vice President, but has acknowledged there was a phone call.
"Last week, the White House wouldn't allow the reports to be sent to the Intelligence Committee. We kept seeing 'drip, drips' of the information. We still don't know what the allegations were or 'were other countries involved?' We do know the president has acknowledged that he had a conversation with the president of another country," Dingell said Tuesday.
