PONTIAC, Mich. (WWJ) -- A veteran Oakland County Animal Shelter and Pet Adoption Center employee was injured Thursday morning after being attacked by a pit bull while on duty in the quarantine area of the shelter.
The dog bit the employee and an animal control officer unsuccessfully attempted to get the dog to release its grip. A second animal control officer shot the dog in order to save the employee, killing it.
Officials say the employee was treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to our employee who begins a long road to recovery," Bill Mullan, Oakland County media and communications officer said. "Shelter staff are working to determine what the circumstances were at the time of the attack."
The Pitbull had been held in the quarantine area because it had bitten several family members the week before, Mullan said. A court hearing was scheduled for next week because the owner did not want to surrender ownership of the dog. Per standard procedure, the animal is being tested for rabies.
