(WWJ) A driver was ticketed for driving 180 miles per hour on I-75, according to Michigan State Police, who are reporting an increase in speeding amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
The driver was pulled over late the night of April 19 on the southbound side of the freeway, near Sigler Rd., in Monroe County's Berlin Township, police said. The man allegedly admitted fault and apologized, telling troopers that he was racing another driver.
While the name of the offender was not released, police did note that the Dodge vehicle had an Ohio license plate.
State Police say there has been an increase in high speeds on roadways during the virus crisis, saying in a Tweet: "MSP wants people to know, just because there is less traffic on the roads & warmer weather, there are no excuses for speeding."
Speaking to WWJ a couple of weeks ago, MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw said that because roads and freeways are emptier than usual, some drivers may not even realize they're speeding. "I think sometimes people get out there and cars these days, they're not as bumpy...and next thing you know you look down and you're going a little bit too fast," he said.
Shaw noted that speeding through construction zones in particular has been problem in metro Detroit, and warned that being "late for work" is not an excuse.
