SOUTH LYON, Mich. (WWJ) -- Fire has destroyed a popular gathering place in South Lyon.
Several fire departments responded to the Lyon Cantina on Pontiac Trail around 7 a.m. Tuesday morning to find the building engulfed in flames.
Fire officials tell WWJ they believe the fire started in the kitchen but the cause was unclear. First responders trying to enter the building were driven back by the smoke and flames.
No injuries were reported.
South Lyon Fire Chief Robert Vogel tells WWJ the building is a total loss.
The fire left Pontiac Trail closed between 9 and 10 Mile Roads. Though the flames had been extinguished, the road remained closed as of 10:30 a.m.
Many South Lyon residents gathered near the scene in disbelief. Ryan Gates of South Lyon told WWJ the Lyon Cantina was a "neighborhood joint" that he's been going to his entire life.
"It's going to be real sad to have the community not have this restaurant around here," Gates said.
