(WWJ) The first snow of the season fell in Northern Michigan last night — and there's more on the way.
AccuWeather says cold air flowing over the relatively warm Great Lakes has caused bouts of lake-effect rain showers in the Midwest over the last few days, with some white flakes in the mix.
Some areas, including in and around Marquette, were just cold enough for snow to mix in late Thursday evening and early Friday morning. Luckily, AccuWeather says with the light intensity of the precipitation and temperatures above freezing, there was no accumulation.
More cold ran is expected in Michigan this weekend. And on the northern fringe of the precipitation, temperatures Saturday night are likely to be low enough to allow snow to mix in.
Take note if you're headed Up North:
"The combination of unseasonably cold air from Canada and an incoming storm system moving across the Midwest could lead to some snow mixing in at times for some areas across the Great Lakes," said AccuWeather Meteorologist Matt Benz. "While moisture is limited with this system, air temperatures appear cold enough for areas like northern Wisconsin to see some snowflakes once again for Saturday night and perhaps some wet snowflakes mixing in Sunday as far south as northern lower Michigan."
All across the state, including in metro Detroit, AccuWeather is calling for chilly weekend temps 10 to 15 degrees below normal for this time of year.
Speaking live on WWJ Newsradio 950 Friday morning, AccuWeather Meteorologist Brian Thompson said there will be some sunshine in Southeast Michigan, but don't let it fool you.
It's going to be cold out there, especially in the evening.
"We'll get up to a high of 56 this afternoon (Friday), chilly tonight with a partly cloudy sky, down to 39 for an overnight low," Thompson said. "And then tomorrow still cool, with intervals of clouds and sun and a high of 57."
Thompson said Saturday will be the better of the two weekend days.
"Sunday will be damp and chilly, with clouds and some rain at times; Sunday's high just 53," he said. "We will start to warm it up a little more into early next week, after that really chilly day on Sunday."
The Monday forecast for metro Detroit is mostly sunny, with a slightly more pleasant high of 60 degrees.
