(WWJ) It's a bummer, we know, but it's our job to inform you it's expected to be a record cold weekend in metro Detroit.
A Freeze Warning is in effect for the Detroit area and much of Southeast Michigan, beginning at midnight Friday until 9 a.m. Saturday.
The National Weather Service says conditions will be right for a hard freeze in spots, mainly along and south of the I-69 corridor. A Freeze Warning means frost and freeze conditions may kill crops and other sensitive vegetation, and could possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing.
Metro Detroiters who already bought flower baskets or annual plants should bring them inside if possible, or cover them with an old tablecloth or sheet. For extra protection, you can cover plants with plastic, but with a cloth barrier in between. It's also recommended to cover any less hardy perennials you may have growing, as those could be killed, too.
WWJ AccuWeather Meteorologist Brian Thompson says it will be "much colder" Friday — with a high of around 47 degrees, and a little snow possible in parts metro Detroit. Flakes were already falling in some places Friday morning.
"We'll continue to see a couple of rain or snow showers as we progress throughout the day," Thomson said. "So it's going to be a chilly day, we'll have a brisk wind at times, with AccuWeather real-feel temperatures only in the 30."
The high will reach around 47 degrees, but Thompson said temps will dip overnight, down to a low of around 27 degrees in Detroit — which would break the record low of 29 set in 1983. Forecasters say temperatures in the mid and upper 20s in Southeast Michigan will challenge both daily record lows and all-time record low temperatures for the month of May.
Thompson says it will remain on the chilly side through the weekend, and into Monday. But, he said, we can look forward to Tuesday, when "it should feel pretty nice, with a good bit of sunshine."
