Fundraiser For Family Of Detroit Firefighter Who Drowned While Rescuing Girls

(WWJ) An online fundraiser is underway for a Detroit firefighter who died a hero.

A GoFundMe account was been est up for Sgt. Sivad Johnson, who drowned late Friday after he jumped into action to help rescue three young girls who were struggling in the water.

Johnson, 48, was off-duty at the time, enjoying the beach with his daughter, when he heard a cry for help and dove into the Detroit River.

While the girls were pulled to safety, Johnson never returned to shore. His body was later recovered by the Michigan State Police Dive Team.

It is believed that Johnson was dragged underwater by a rip current, officials said.

"He didn't even hesitate even though he knew there were currents. There's even a sign here that says 'danger no swimming'. He just disregarded his own safety. He just jumped in. That's what firefighters do," Detroit Deputy Fire Commissioner Dave Fornell told WWJ.

A 26-year veteran of the Detroit Fire Department Johnson leaves behind two daughters, ages 10 and 16.

Support for Johnson's family has been pouring in following his tragic death, along with donations to support his children.

As of late Monday morning, the fundraiser had already brought in $42,813 toward a $50,000 goal.

"His children no longer have a father but they will forever have the knowledge that he was a rare, true hero," donor Kristin Kramer commented.

Patricia Behler wrote: "I want to let his daughters know that they will be strong in remembering their very brave father."

Mitch Riley added: "Our heroes never get the recognition they deserve, and they never ask. RIP Sgt. Johnson. Prayers to the family."
