Health Officials Warn Of Increasing Flu Activity In Michigan

DETROIT (WWJ) - The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services says regional flu activity is on the rise.

State Health Department spokeswoman Lynn Sutfin says while there haven't been an child deaths connected to the flu here, 10 have been reported around the country.

"So, we do know that this is a possibility. Those that are young and those that are on the older end of the spectrum are far more vulnerable to influenza, so we definitely want to make sure that those individuals are protected," she said.

Health experts say it's not too late to get a flu shot.  It takes about two weeks after the vaccine is administered before the body builds up enough immunity to prevent the flu.

"We are seeing increases in lab-confirmed flu cases in the southwest region of the state," said Sutfin. "So, we are starting to see activity pick up in Michigan and we are urging everyone to get their flu vaccination."

Officials encourage people who are sick to stay home to prevent infecting others.

To prevent the spread of germs, wash your hands often and cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze. You should also clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs like the flu.

Influenza is not the stomach flu but is a contagious respiratory disease caused by different strains of the virus and can result in mild to severe illness. In Michigan, four children died last season due to flu-related complications.
