(WWJ) - How would you like to help shape the way voting districts are designated in Michigan?
Residents can now sign up for a chance to be a part of redrawing the state's district lines. Thirteen people from around the state will be selected to serve on the new Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission, which will be responsible for redrawing electoral maps.
Four Republicans, four Democrats and five non-affiliated voters will be chosen randomly to serve on the commission by the fall of 2020.
You do not need any specific skills or expertise to apply. The constitution simply requires that each commissioner "perform his or her duties in a manner that is impartial and reinforces public confidence in the integrity of the redistricting process." Commissioners must be registered Michigan voters. To apply, visit RedistrictingMichigan.org.
The move comes after voters approved Proposal 2 at the ballot box last year, which called for a citizen-led committee to redraw district lines for the Michigan Senate, Michigan House of Representatives and U.S. Congress.
