CORUNNA, Mich. (WWJ/AP) - A lawyer says a Michigan man charged with killing and mutilating a man he met through a dating app is mentally unfit to stand trial.

Douglas Corwin Jr. said Mark Latunski underwent an exam at a state psychiatry center, after the attorney last month filed notices seeking an insanity defense and a psychiatric evaluation for Latunski.

Latunski, 50, will remain in custody without bond while getting treatment to improve his competency. It's unclear how long that could take.

Latunski is charged with open murder and disinterment and mutilation of a body in the slaying of 25-year-old Kevin Bacon in December.

Bacon's was found dead on Dec. 28, 2019, named and hanging by his ankles from the ceiling of Latunski’s home in Shiawassee County's Bennington Township. Investigators allege in court records that Latunski admitted to stabbing Bacon in the back, slitting his throat, and removing his testicles and later eating them.

Bacon’s roommate, Michelle Myers, told police Bacon met Latunski on Christmas Eve after connecting with him on Grindr.

Divorce, custody and criminal records show a history of complaints about Latunski's mental health. He was described as "fixated on a conspiracy theory" and known to stop taking medication prescribed to treat his mental illnesses.
