Police: Man In Custody After Hours-Long Standoff In Novi

(WWJ) A barricaded gunman situation at a Novi mobile home park has ended peacefully.

A man who had been holed up inside a home on Gornada Ave., near Haggerty Rd. and 12 Mile Rd, was taken into custody Thursday afternoon — about eight hours after the standoff began.

While it's believed a single shot was fired, there were no injuries, Novi Deputy Police Cheif Eric Zinser said.

Some neighbors were evacuated, and others told to shelter and place, after police and a regional SWAT team arrived on the scene at Country Cousin mobile home park at around 5 a.m.

"This is shocking, I can't believe it...Nothing like that happens around here," one neighbor told WWJ's Mike Cambell.

Zinser told said officers were called to conduct a welfare check at a home where the mother of 44-year-old man was seeking help for her son's addiction.

The man was armed.

"When our officers arrived and approached the home they had to knock on the door," Zinser said, mid-morning. "One gunshot went off inside the home. The mother came running out of the home."

"Right now we don't believe anybody's injured in this incident," Zinser added. "We believe the son that's in the home is still alive."

Zinser said police have been called to the home before, but it was back in 2014.

The name of the man arrested was not immediately released. It's unclear yet what charges he may face.
