DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit police are investigating a vehicle theft that happened right outside of one of their departments in the parking lot.
The situation unfolded around 5 p.m. Friday when a 27-year-old man was involved in a crash with a red Impala on Gallagher Street and 8 Mile Road, west of Ryan Road on the east side.
Both drivers went to the 11th Precinct, on Nevada Avenue near Mound Road, to make a report. While in the parking lot of the precinct, a 23-year-old passenger in the Impala allegedly exited his car, then took the victim's van and fled. Another passenger who was in the Impala jumped in the driver's seat and fled as well.
Both vehicles subsequently collided into each other about a block away in the area of Fenelon and Stockton streets. As a result, the 23-year-old suspect sustained injuries. He was transported to a local hospital and last reported in critical condition.
The driver of the Impala fled the scene on foot and remains at large. He's described as black male in his 20s, 5'10" tall with a medium complexion.
The incident remains under investigation.
