SHELBY TWP. (WWJ) - One person is in critical condition following a shootout Monday in Shelby Township.
According to Shelby Township Police Chief Robert Shelide, two armed men met up in a parking lot at the intersection of 23 Mile Rd. and Shelby Rd., at around 1:30 p.m.
Shelide said the men, who knew each other, got into an altercation. One pulled out a gun and shot at the other, but missed.
The other man returned fire, hitting the initial shooter several times, causing critical injuries.
The uninjured man called 911 and waited for police at the scene. The wounded man was taken to a local hospital.
By mid-afternoon, police said the situation was "contained" and there's no further threat to the public. However, they're still urging the public to avoid the area.
Police said an investigation is underway and that the public should expect to see police officers in that area into the evening hours.
Shelide told WWJ they're also reviewing surveillance video of the shooting.
Investigators have not said what the dispute was about. No names have been released.
