(WWJ) Detroit police are asking for the public's help as they investigate what they're calling a "hate crime" on the city's east side. On Saturday, Aug. 15, at around 5:30 a.m., police say home surveillance footage captured an unknown suspect spray painting "ethnic intimidating language" on the front walkway of a residence in the 5000 block of Burns St., and on street signs nearby.
Messages in black paint include the words "EVIL WHITE," with an arrow pointing to a residence, and "THESE PEOPLE ARE EVIL."
The suspect fled the location, in the area of E. Warren Ave., east of Van Dyke Ave., on foot, heading in an unknown direction. Police on Wednesday released photos of the vandalized pavement and sign, as well as a fuzzy video of the suspect in the act.
If caught, he or she could face a felony charge of ethnic intimidation, punishable by up to two years in prison.
No further information has been released, as the investigation continues.
Anyone who can identify the suspect or who has any other information about this crime is asked to call the Detroit Police Department's Seventh Precinct at 313-5965740. To remain anonymous, call the Crime Stoppers tip line at 1-800-Speak Up (1-800-773-2587).
