DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - The international border tunnel connecting Detroit to Windsor, Ontario, Canada will see temporary closures as part of an ongoing $22 million renovation project.

The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel is expected to shut down from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Oct. 17, Oct. 24, Oct. 31 and Nov. 7.

The renovations began in January 2017 and included replacement of the 89-year-old tunnel's concrete ceiling, as well as masonry, electrical work and other infrastructure improvements.

Detroit-Windsor Tunnel president Neal Belitsky says the latest repair work is part of continued maintenance necessary because of natural occurrences tied to an underwater tunnel.

"We greatly appreciate the patience and understanding of our customers during this important renovation work. Throughout the process we have limited closures as much as possible and to off-hours to minimize disruptions," Belitsky said, in a media release. "Given the importance and age of the tunnel, it is vital that we do this work right in order to ensure the safety of travelers and the future longevity of this crucial piece of infrastructure.

The tunnel opened in 1930 and runs beneath the surface of the Detroit River; about12,000 vehicles use it daily.

The closure could show traffic on the Ambassador Bridge, so Detroit-area drivers with plans to go to Canada during this time should plan ahead for backups.
