(WWJ) Michigan State Police say a child was thrown from an SUV after a crash along I-96 in Detroit.

MSP troopers were on the scene investigating the incident, late Wednesday afternoon, in the Express lanes of eastbound I-96, near the Southfield Freeway.

Police said a preliminary investigation revealed that a woman was driving a Ford Explorer, with four children on board, when she lost control.

The SUV struck the right wall and veered across all lanes of travel, police said, then hitting the left wall.

One of the kids were ejected out of the vehicle from the impact. The child was taken by EMS to Children's Hospital in critical condition.

It's unclear if anyone else was hurt.

Other details, including whether the child was properly restrained and why the driver lost control, are also unknown at this time.

All eastbound Express lanes were blocked at Outer Drive following the crash, with police urging people to avoid the area during the afternoon commute.

By around 5:30 p.m., the scene had cleared and the freeway reopened.
