(WWJ) What began as a traffic stop in Canton ended as a weapons bust.
Michigan State Police say they pulled a driver over for speeding along southbound I-275 Wednesday morning.
The people in the vehicle, which was pulling a boat, told troopers they were en route to the Monroe area for a fishing trip. During the conversation, the driver told troopers there was a handgun in the car, but admitted he didn't have a concealed pistol license.
Troopers searched the vehicle and found a total of four handguns, along with ammunition and a suppressor.
The driver was arrested and remains in police custody while the prosecutor's office determines charges.
"We have discussed the amount of excessive speed we have seen in the Metro North Post area during the pandemic. Today the Metro South Post is also addressing the issue in Wayne County," police said. "But, we also know that when we conduct traffic enforcement we also stop other crimes."
The suspect's name was not immediately released.
