(WWJ) -- Thousands of metro Detroiters woke up Sunday morning without power after heavy rains and high winds blew across Michigan on Saturday.

As of an 11 a.m. update, DTE Energy said about 28,000 customers lost power in the metro Detroit area, with an additional 2,400 in the dark just east of Lansing.

The DTE outage map showed numerous pockets of outages affecting more than 1,000 homes and businesses throughout the utility's service area.

Restoration crews were dispatched Sunday morning and are expected to work throughout the day to restore power, but DTE has not released estimated times of restoration for many areas, because wind gusts of 30-40 mph were expected to remain throughout the day. Some areas are expected to regain power Sunday afternoon.

DTE says around 200 power lines were knocked down by the wind over the weekend. Anyone who sees a downed line should stay at least 20 feet away and call DTE.
