DETROIT (WWJ) - A driver was taken to the hospital after he lost control of a stolen vehicle and smashed into a former library on Detroit's west side.
The crash happened early Thursday morning at a vacant Detroit Public Library Richard Branch along Grand River Avenue at Stoepel, just west of Livernois.
Witnesses said an SUV was traveling eastbound when it crossed into the westbound lanes, hit the building, spun around and landed on the sidewalk with both driver's side tires missing.
The 35-year-old driver, who was taken from the scene by Detroit Fire Department EMS, was listed in critical condition at a local hospital.
Police said the SUV was stolen, and the man was expected to face charges. His name was not immediately released.
The crash remains under investigation.
