(WWJ) A thunderstorm in Michigan's Upper Peninsula on Monday spun up a tornado.

According to the Delta County Sheriff's Office, the tornado touched down at 5:45 p.m. on US-2 near K-Lane in Wells Township, just west of Escanaba near Pine Ridge.

National Weather Service Marquette Meteorologist Jacklyn Ritzma said it happened quickly, and didn't last long.

"We had a number of videos that came in that had, you could clearly kind of see the funnel cloud coming down and then touching the ground, that really makes it pretty evident that it was a tornado," Ritzma told WWJ's Beth Fisher. "And then there was some rotation on radar, so we kind of look at all  those different factors to rule that...in all likelihood there was a very brief tornado."

Local resident Heidi Lewis LaBar said she saw it.

She wrote on Facebook: "Yes it looked like two funnel clouds. I was getting gas at Meijer’s , the one on the right went up first. Just two or three minutes later the state police started heading that way. One car at a time. Then I went to Menards for two items. Walmart for three items. Came out, to beautiful blue sunny skies. Tornadoes happen so fast, rarely time to prepare."

While no one was hurt,  Ritzman said the twister did do some damage.

"We had a number of pictures come in and even some videos from some folks who were in the area of some damage to some storage sheds down there, and a bunch of tree damage, and downed power lines as well," she said.

Ritzman said they will be sending a crew to the area on Tuesday to assess the damage.

The sheriff's office said a detour has been set up on J.5 Rd. to Old State Rd. to K.5 Rd. Those traveling through that area are asked to use a different route if possible.
