Two Lake Orion Teens Rescued After Large Wave Thrusts Them Into Lake Michigan

lake michigan waves

(WWJ) Two Lake Orion teens were swept off the pier into Lake Michigan by a large wave about 40 miles west of Grand Rapids.

MLive reports a man, 18, and a girl, 17, were near the end of the long South Pier by the second lighthouse when the wave struck them from behind Saturday morning in Grand Haven.

A nearby Good Samaritan threw them a life ring, multiple reports said. The man hurt his arm, but he is expected to make a full recovery.

The National Weather Service issued a Red Flag Warning for beaches between St. Joseph and Manistee on Saturday, meaning waves of more than 4 feet are likely. The NWS Grand Rapids office warned swimming on north piers would be "especially dangerous."

"Consider postponing your beach day or travel to a safer location," they wrote.

In a separate warning, the NWS said waves may crest up to 8 feet on Saturday.

Moderate waves of two to four feet and "hazardous swimming conditions" are forecast on Sunday. The Lake Michigan shoreline is under an Orange Flag Warning, meaning swimming is "discouraged."

The NWS Grand Rapids office is once again encouraging people to save their beach trip for another day.
