(WWJ) Warren Police say they’ve made an arrest in a hit-and-run that left a father dead.

Police say a 32-year-old man, with no known connection to the victim, is in custody. Investigators are pursuing vehicular homicide charges against him.

Investigators say a Ford Crown Victoria came barreling toward the victim in the area of Cyman and Toepfer at 9:45pm Thursday night. He threw up his arms and gestured to the car to slow down.

Warren Police Commissioner, Bill Dwyer, told WWJ’s Christina McDaniel, the victim “was a father trying to protect children from a speeding car.”

Police say the suspect got out of the car and started to beat the man over and over again. The suspect got back in his car and accelerated into him. The press release said: “As the Ford drove away, the male citizen went over the top of the car and landed on the pavement.”

The victim died later at the hospital.

Dwyer commended a member of his team, Officer Nicholas Tate, for locating a car that matched the suspect’s vehicle description early Saturday morning at the end of a 10-hour shift.

Officers arrested the suspect at a home in the area of 9 Mile and Van Dyke shortly after. He’s expected to be charged on Monday.

Dwyer called the case “senseless” and “very sad.”
