(WWJ) A metro Detroit woman led police on a chase in northern Michigan that ended when she crossed the Mackinac Bridge.

Michigan State Police say the 31-year-old Waterford Township resident was pulled over on northbound I-75 near Gaylord, Thursday morning, for a traffic violation. At some point during the stop, the woman sped away.

A short time later, Cheboygan County Sheriff's deputies spotted the woman's vehicle, a 2018 Volkswagen GTI, and gave chase.

Stop sticks were used to flatten the car tires, MSP. Lt. Derrick Carroll said, and the woman ended up driving on three rims across the Mackinac Bridge before she was forced to give up.

"My understanding is there's a toll gate there and other vehicles, and she had to stop because of traffic," said Carroll. "The troopers just came right next to her, and they were waiting for her."

The woman was taken into custody on fleeing and eluding charges.

As for why she fled, Carroll said the woman didn't have any warrants, she had a valid driver's license and nothing illegal was found in the car.

"Nothing ever ceases to amaze us. People flee for unknown reasons — you never know why they are," Carroll said. "In this case she fled the scene for whatever reasons she had. We do not have a motive at this time."

The woman's name is being withheld pending an arraignment.

No injuries were reported.
