DETROIT (WWJ) -- The Wayne County Medical examiner is investigating what is believed to be a pair of cold-related deaths as the actual temperature reached as low as seven degrees below zero Wednesday morning in Detroit.
Officials say a black male, believed to be about 70 years old, was found dead a round 8 a.m. on Webb Street near the John C. Lodge Freeway on the city's northwest side.
An investigation is still pending, but it is believed he froze to death.
Meanwhile, in Ecorse, police say another man in his 70s was found dead out in the cold across the street from his home. Police say he was a former member of the Ecorse City Council and may have become disoriented.
He was not wearing a hat or gloves to protect himself from the sub-zero chill, authorities said.
Following Monday's storm that blanketed much of Michigan in snow, an arctic chill has set in, with temperatures dipping well below zero and wind chills approaching -50 degrees.
Michiganders are urged to stay home if they can. Those who do have to go outside are encouraged to wear hats and gloves, dress in layers, and cover any exposed skin, as frostbite can set in within 10 minutes of being exposed to the extreme cold.
