DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit police say they've confirmed that remains found in a pair of caskets at a west side home are animal bones.

Officers were first called to the house on Rosemont Avenue, near McNichols Road and the Southfield Freeway, after contractors working on the home made a discovery Wednesday evening.

"There were some renovators fixing up the house. Inside they found what was a casket and possible remains," Officer Dan Donakowski told WWJ's Michael Cohen. "Upon further investigation, it appears that there were some remains of an animal inside."

Donakowski says officers were called back to the house on Thursday when another casket was found in an alley outside of the home. Reports indicate it had the name of a woman who died almost 20 years ago, and the home was owned by a former mortician who died in 2017. Donakowski was unable to confirm those details.

"The bones were taken over to the medical examiner's office for further investigation to make sure that they were either human or animal," police said.

Following further investrigation, police said Friday afternoon that the remains are indeed animal bones.

No further details were immediately released.
