PORT AUSTIN, Mich. (WWJ) -- Three people are recovering after being rescued drom the choppy waters of Lake Huron Saturday afternoon.

Police say a 16-year-old girl from Warren had climbed down the breakwall ladder near Port Austin to dip her toes down the water when she slippped and fell in.

As she began struggling in the water, bystanders threw the girl a life ring and two relatives, ages 22 and 15, jumped in to help her. They were also quickly overcome by the waves, just as police rescue teams arrived.

Rescuers were able to safely rescue all three people. They were all treated at the scene and asked not to be taken to the hospital.

The Huron County Sheriff's Office is reminding those who visit the breakwall to not leave the walkway. Officials say many people over the years have fallen into the water, and some have even died in similar incidents.
