(WWJ) The photo is a heart-grabber, and now Michigan State Police say the trooper from the crumpled patrol car is in critical condition.
Police said they believe alcohol was a factor in a head-on crash that critically injured the trooper, Caleb Starr, and another driver.
It happened last weekend near Saranac.
Starr has not regained consciousness since the crash, Lt. David Cope, public information officer for MSP's Sixth District operations, told the Lansing State Journal.
The other driver, a 28-year-old Utah woman, had been drinking, Cope said. Her SUV crossed the center line on Grand River Avenue and hit Starr's cruiser.
The woman also remains in critical condition but was stable and conscious, he said. Her name has not been released, and no charges have yet been issued.
