DETROIT (WWJ) - A speeding driver, also suspected of being under the influence, slammed into the back of another vehicle on the Lodge Freeway late Tuesday night, killing one person and seriously injuring another.
Michigan State Police shutdown the southbound lanes of M-10 near W. Outer Drive for over five hours as they investigated the fatal crash, which occurred around 11:15 p.m. on Oct. 10.
Troopers responded to the scene of a blocking rollover crash and identified the suspect as a 34-year-old driver from Warren. Based on their initial investigation, troopers allege the suspect driver was speeding southbound on the Lodge when they collided with another vehicle.
"One of the passengers, in the non at fault vehicle, a 21-year-old from Detroit, was pronounced dead on the scene," troopers said in a 7:30 a.m. update on Wednesday. "A second passenger is in critical condition."
No other serious injuries were reported.
The suspect driver is believed to have been under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the crash. MSP said the suspect refused all tests and a search warrant is being sought for their blood.
MSP added that families have been notified of the incident.
MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw said the crash could've been avoided and vowed to hold drivers who break the law accountable for their actions.
"We have lost another member of our community in a preventable crash." Shaw said. "There is no excuse for any driver driving at a high rate of speed and under the influence on our roads."
The investigation is currently waiting on blood results from the suspect and a prosecutor review for charges.
