DETROIT (WWJ) -- Detroit Police are vowing to stay vigilant after a pair of weekend shootings left one person dead and five others injured.
Updating the media on these cases on Monday, Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison said a shooting at a liquor store in the Morningside neighborhood left one woman dead and another in critical condition.
The suspect fled on foot, but was later arrested.
Bettison said that shooting was personal for members of the police department.
"The victims were relatives of our own DPD sergeant, So, this incident hit close to home, our DPD family," the chief said. "We stand with them as we navigate this unimaginable loss."
It was not immediately clear what led to that shooting.
Bettison revealed during a Monday news conference that the suspect in custody in that case is a 15-year-old boy. A warrant has been submitted to the Wayne County Prosecutors' Office, with formal charges expected by the end of this week.
All names are being withheld at this time.
Bettison said a separate drive-by shooting last Friday, in the 3700 block of Haverhill on the city's east side, is categorized as a mass shooting.
In that case, four people were shot, including a 10-year-old boy, a 40-year-old woman, a 40-year-old man, and a man in his 20s, as they were walking out of a home.
Bettison said all four victims survived and were taken to hospitals for treatment.
However, he said the woman remains in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the head.
She's the mother of the child who was shot, police said, and the other victims are also relatives.
A weapon was recovered on the scene, but the suspect in that case remains at large.
"Our homicide task force is investigation, and we will continue to ask the community for information in regards to this," the chief said.
