1 dead in wrong-way crash on US-23 that prompted 6-hour freeway closure in Washtenaw County: MSP

PITTSFIELD TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - US-23 near Ann Arbor was closed for several hours on Saturday morning following a fatal wrong-way crash, authorities said.

Michigan State Police told WWJ that one of the drivers involved was traveling down the wrong side of the freeway around 3 a.m. when the vehicle collided head-on another driver in the southbound lanes of US-23 in Pittsfield Township.

One person died in the crash, but authorities have not released any details about the victim.

The freeway was closed for over six hours while accident reconstruction investigators were at the scene. The affected portion of US-23 has since reopened.

Police have not clarified if drugs, alcohol or speed were factors in the crash. Additional details are expected to be released at a later time.
