One man killed, another critically injured in head-on highway crash involving wrong-way driver: MSP

(WWJ) A driver going the wrong way on a highway the Grand Rapids area over the weekend killed another driver, according to the Michigan State Police.

The deadly crash happened Sunday morning, police said, along northbound US-131, just south of Burton.


According to a preliminary investigation by the MSP Sixth District, a 30-year-old Grand Rapids man was driving southbound in the northbound lanes just after 8:30 a.m. on April 2, when he slammed head-on into a northbound vehicle.

The driver of the car he crashed into, identified as a 63-year-old man from Byron Center, was pronounced deceased on scene.

The wrong-way driver was taken to a hospital where he was listed in critical condition, as of Sunday afternoon.

As for what led to the crash, MSP said alcohol may be a factor; although the investigation is ongoing.

The freeway was closed following the incident, but has since reopened.

Anyone who witnessed the crash, or who saw the driver going going the wrong way, is asked to call MSP at 616-866-4411.

MSP said the name of the man who died is being withheld as police=work to properly notify his family.
