DETROIT (WWJ) - One woman is dead and six others were hurt in a hit-and-run crash that caused their vehicle to erupt into flames in Detroit on Memorial Day -- and police are now trying to track down the driver who allegedly struck them.
The Detroit Police Department said the crash occurred on the city's west side around 1 a.m. Monday, May 29, when a driver heading down Grand River Ave. near Long Acre smashed into another vehicle before crashing though a building.
Not moments after collision, the vehicle that was hit burst into flames and neighbors and witnesses jumped in to pull out seven people trapped in the burning car.
Police confirmed one of the victims, a 20-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene while six others were transported to the hospital with serious injuries.
In the last update provided on Monday afternoon, only two of the hospitalized victims had improved while the other four remained in serious condition.
At this time, police have not released if they believe speed, alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash, but they are trying to track down the other driver who fled from the scene.
A description of the suspect or vehicle they are looking for has not been made public as of Tuesday morning.
Anyone with any information about the incident has been asked to contact the Detroit Police Department at (313) 596-2200 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAKUP.
