1 man in critical condition after West Michigan barn explosion causes severe injuries to lower body, deputies say

ALLENDALE CHARTER TWP., Mich. (WWJ) - One man sustained critical injuries, including burns and lacerations, after he was rescued by first responders from a barn explosion in West Michigan on Friday.

The Ottawa County Sheriff's Department said deputies were dispatched to reports of a barn fire around 8:37 p.m. on 52nd Avenue near Jordan Street in Allendale Charter Township the evening of Dec. 23.


Authorities said they were told that a barn had exploded and a man was trapped inside.

When deputies arrived on scene, they located a a 37-year-old man in the barn and were able to pull him to safety.

According to the sheriff's office, the man's lower extremities and abdomen were severely injured and he sustained burns and lacerations.

Deputies said the man was transported to the hospital in "critical condition."

Although the cause of the explosion remain unclear, deputies said they believed it was accidental and did not find it suspicious.

The incident remains under investigation with the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department.
