SAGINAW (WWJ) - A suspect who exchanged gunfire with officers during domestic violence incident at a Saginaw residence was shot and killed by area police early Saturday morning.

Michigan State Police confirmed they are investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred outside a home in the 2000 block of Fairfax Street in Saginaw just before 1 a.m. on Aug. 12.

According to troopers, officers with the Saginaw Police Department responded to the scene after receiving a report of a domestic violence related assault that resulted in injuries to a victim.

When officers arrived at the home, they tried to make contact with the male suspect -- identified as a 58-year-old man -- but the man produced a firearm and shot at police when they tried to enter his home.

Police returned fire, but retreated to safety, MSP added.

Troopers then arrived at the scene to help set up a perimeter and also tried to communicate with the suspect a short while later. MSP said the man came out of the home, but brandished a gun and threatened law enforcement.

"Troopers fired their weapons to stop the threat," state police explained. "The suspect sustained at least one gunshot wound. Medical treatment was provided on scene prior to the man being transported to a local hospital by EMS, where he succumbed to his injuries."

Officers were able to reach the domestic violence victim, who was taken to a local hospital and treated for her injuries.

No one else was hurt in the incident.

The three troopers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave, per department policy, as the case remains under investigation.

When completed, a full report will be provided to the Saginaw County Prosecutor's Office for review.

No other details were released.

"If you are experiencing domestic violence, sexual assault or stalking, please call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-799-7233," troopers urged. "In Saginaw County, the Underground Railroad can be reached at 888-399-8385."
