At least ten people are homeless this morning after a fire destroyed four homes on Detroit's east side.

The fire started in a vacant home on St. Clair Street near Mack and McClellan this morning and spread to three other homes. One woman who lived in one of the homes said the fire was noticed by a woman who woke up to help her baby. She says if that didn't happen, they may have died.

The fire was reported shortly after four other homes burned around 2 a.m. about five blocks away on Lillibridge Street.

It's unclear if there's any connection.

Neighbors told WWJ's Charlie Langton they couldn't get any response from the Fire Department on the phone, so one walked to a nearby fire house to get help. "We called twice, they hung up on our face," one man said.

"My house was not vacant, my house was fully amenable. We were asleep in the house and we woke up to this fire," a woman said.
