DETROIT (WWJ) - A young girl is fighting for her life after she was shot in the head early Tuesday morning at a Detroit home that's been the scene of a shooting twice in the last two months.

Detroit Police Assistant Chief Charles Fitzgerald said police are working on piecing together what led up to 23 shots being fired at the home in the 6000 block of Pennsylvania Street, near I-94 and Gratiot, at 4 a.m. Feb. 20, telling media that, "the story doesn’t make a whole lot of sense."

"We’ve got an uncle inside who doesn’t quite know the name of his niece. We’ve got a father who finally showed up at the hospital," Fitzgerald said. "Right now, this young girl is critical. She should be getting ready to get up pretty soon and go to school and she’s shot in the head."

According to Fitzgerald, police are searching for two shooting suspects at this time, who were captured on footage arriving on the block in a white or silver SUV.

"A couple guys jumped out, ran down and fired into the house," Fitzgerald said, adding that the girl was on the couch when she was struck.

A call was made to 911 and the young child was rushed to Children's Hospital where she was stabilized, but in critical condition.

Fitzgerald said they're unsure how many people were home at the time of the shooting, stating that at one point, as many as 20 people were inside.

"We’ve got a lot of work to do on this," he added

Fitzgerald said investigators are acutely aware that the home has been targeted by gunfire before with shots fired at the home back in December of 2023.

"Same exact house... and at that time same thing," he stated. "Everyone said they were upstairs. Shots fired at the house and no one was struck then, but there’s definitely something going on at this house we need to look into."

At time time, the investigation remains in preliminary stages with information subject to change as it becomes available.

Fitzgerald ended the media briefing by condemning the "senseless" act.

"Chief [White] says it all the time, a lot of anger. A lot of frustration," he commented over the department's reaction to the incident. "This is silliness. This is ridiculous. If you think these guns make you tough, it doesn’t, it makes you cowardly."
