KENT COUNTY (WWJ) - A teen accused of detonating fireworks at a West Michigan high school was charged this week after the explosions led others to believe there was an active shooter, deputies say.
The Kent County Sheriff's Office said in a release that a 14-year-old East Kentwood student was charged in juvenile court with possession with intent to terrorize on Tuesday after the teen set off fireworks in a school bathroom.
On Monday, Oct. 31, deputies said they were called out to East Kentwood High School in Kentwood, Mich., in the Grand Rapids metropolitan area, for possible shots fired in the freshman center.
"Deputies arrived on the scene in under three minutes," the sheriff's office said. "Just prior to arrival school security staff were able to determine that the noise was a result of fireworks."
The school worked wih sheriff's deputies to question those involved in the incident.
The case was then forwarded and reviewed by the Kent County Prosecutor's Office.
