WESTLAND (WWJ) Westland Police arrested two adults and a teen driver during a wild police chase. You can see police video here.
The Westland Police Department said their officers responded to Hunter Avenue, in the area of Wayne and Ford Road, around 2:20 a.m. Thursday (4/11) for an attempted car theft. When they arrived, officers were told abut a nearby car that may be involved.
When they approached the car, the driver attempted to flee the area and crashed into multiple garages “causing a great deal of property damage,” police said in a press release.
The officer got out of his car, and the suspect vehicle tried to drive away “without regard for the officer in its path,” according to police. The officer was “forced to retreat” so he would not be hit.
The suspect vehicle struck the officer’s side door, police said.
Another officer saw the suspect’s car, a stolen white Kia Optima, and tried to pull it over, according to police.
The driver did not stop, leading police on a pursuit, that eventually ended when the suspect's car struck a light pole at Ford and Central City parkway, about 1.5 miles away from the initial crime scene.
Police said a 15-year-old Detroit girl was driving the car. She was arrested after she ran from officers, and is housed at the Wayne County Juvenile Detention Facility. A 12-year-old Detroit girl and 13-year-old Detroit boy were turned over to their parents, and criminal complaints were filed against them.
James Hayes, 18 of Detroit, was arraigned on the felony charge of receiving and concealing stolen property. He was issued a $10,000 bond and must wear a GPS tether.
Kahari Thomas, 18 of Detroit, was arraigned on the same charge as Hayes and received the same consequences. They are both due for a probable cause hearing on April 25.
