190 Michigan businesses face COVID fines of up to $6,300 for failure to follow rules

More businesses throughout Metro Detroit have been fined for violating state workplace safety guidelines as it relates to coronavirus.

The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration fined the Regency at Livonia $6,300 for allowing a sick employee to be around others.


The inspection of the Regency started after the company reported a worker died.

Some of the other companies fined were FM Carpenters in Detroit, which will have to pay $2,000 for not having workers wear face masks and not doing daily health screenings.

New Life Services in West Bloomfield was fined $3,500 for not requiring workers to wear face coverings and not having signs up that encourage workers to stay away when sick.

Location: Onsted

Fine: None

Reasons: Not developing a written COVID-19 preparedness and response plan. The inspection was initiated as a planned-programmed inspection.

Brann's Steakhouse and Grill

Location: Holland

Fine: $3,500

Reasons: Failure to require face coverings when social distancing could not be maintained, failure to assure that employee pre-work health was evaluated through the administration of either a daily in-person or virtual health check and failure to assure the installation and use of physical barriers in areas (like bar and hostess stations) where employees had frequent close contact with patrons. The inspection was initiated in response to an employee complaint.

Camacho Restoration LLC

Location: Ionia

Fine: $1,200

Reasons: Not having a written COVID-19 preparedness and response plan available. The inspection was initiated as a planned-programmed inspection.

Curtis Custom Carpentry

Location: Metamora

Fine: $2,000

Reasons: Not having a written COVID-19 preparedness and response plan available. The inspection was initiated as a planned-programmed inspection.

DeWys Manufacturing

Location: Marne

Fine: $4,900

Reasons: Lack of daily self-screening for employees, not enforcing face coverings when within 6 feet of other individuals and no records maintained for employee notification after contact with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 individuals. The inspection was initiated from an injury and illness report.

FM Carpenters LLC

Location: Detroit

Fine: $5,700, but only $2,000 from COVID-19 violations

Reasons: No written response and preparedness plan, no face coverings while within 6 feet of another and no daily health screenings. The inspection was initiated as a planned-programmed inspection.

Napa Auto Parts

Location: Grand Rapids

Fine: $4,500

Reasons: Lack of enforcing face coverings when within 6 feet of other individuals. The inspection was initiated from an employee complaint.

Hudsonville Creamery and Ice Cream

Location: Holland

Fine: $5,600

Reasons: Lack of established disinfecting procedures when there is suspected or confirmed cases of COVID-19, no daily self-screening for salaried employees or contractors, not notifying employees after contact with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 individuals within the proper time frame, not prohibiting individuals from being within 6 feet of other individuals whenever possible, not enforcing face coverings when within 6 feet of other individuals, training did not cover workplace infection-control practices, COVID-19 preparedness and response plan was missing several items, no posters to encourage employees to stay way when sick and proper hand hygiene and no records maintained for employee training, self-screening and notifications. The inspection was initiated in response to an employee complaint.

Fine: $6,300

Reasons: Permitting an employee to work around others in a shared office space while exhibiting signs and symptoms (i.e., coughing) of a respiratory-related illness. The inspection was initiated in response to an employer-reported fatality.

Fine: $1,900, but only $500 for COVID-19 violations

Reasons: Not requiring face coverings when social distancing could not be maintained, not maintaining social distancing and not maintaining a record of employee COVID-19 training. The inspection was initiated as a planned-programmed inspection.

Turris Italian Foods Inc.

Location: New Baltimore

Fine: $5,300, but only $4,500 for COVID-19 violations

Reasons: The employer did not conduct the daily health screening including a questionnaire. The inspection was initiated in response to an employee complaint.
