DETROIT (WWJ) -- An investigation is underway after a crash on Detroit's east side left two people dead over the weekend.

Police say late Saturday night an SUV collided with a Dodge Charger in the area of Maxwell Street and East Warren Avenue, sending the SUV into the front entrance of Second Timothy Baptist Church on the corner.

A man and woman who were inside the vehicle were both killed despite efforts from bystanders to rescue them from the burning vehicle.

Police are still investigating the crash, but reports say the SUV may have been drag racing prior to the collision.

Authorities have not released the names or ages of anyone involved. It was unclear whether anyone in the Dodge Charger was injured.

A memorial was created on the steps of the church Sunday and services were canceled while cleanup efforts got underway.
